The Everglades – The Everglades contains tree islands, mangroves, coastal prairies, and subtropical hammocks, ecosystems that are home to about 400 species of birds, dozens of reptiles, more than 20 types of native mammals, and 14 endangered species – including the Florida Panther, the leatherback turtle and the west Indian manatee. An enormous variety of flora also thrives in the Everglades. Pines and Palmettos grow in the dry uplands and nowhere else in the United States can you find these temperate plants alongside such a rich selection of orchids and tropical trees. Air plants, such as Spanish moss and other bromeliads, are especially striking. If you’re guests are lucky, they might even spot the cowhorn, an orchid that weighs as much as 75 pounds, though it is increasingly rare because of plant poachers. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens (Villa Vizcaya) – “Venice in the Tropics” is one description of Villa Vizcaya, James Deering’s winter home, built in 1916 by F.Burrall Hoffman Jr. Deering, cofounder of International Harvester, was a tireless art collector who wanted a winter home. What started as a retreat became the epitome of America’s emulation of European elegance. It took nearly three years to build and even longer to finish what ended up as a small village with extensively landscaped grounds, gondolas, waterways, housing for support staff, and gardens to feed them. Today, the house is maintained as a museum and serves as a splendid site for concerts and receptions. It is widely considered the finest example of Italian-Renaissance architecture in Florida. Fort Lauderdale Museum of Science & Discovery – Adjacent to the trendy Riverwalk area on Las Olas Boulevard is the unique venue offering South Florida's only IMAX 3D/PSE Theater and over 200 hands-on exhibits. Featured exhibits include ecology, indigenous animals and habitats, technology, space, health, sound and physical sciences. Museum of Cartoon Art – Located in Boca Raton (South East Palm Beach County) in the trendy Mizner Park, the Museum offers a glimpse into the history and magic of cartoon art. This museum boasts one of the finest collections of lithographs and hand painted films throughout the history of animated art. Packages including a visit to the museum could include a private movie showing at the adjacent theater or dinner in a unique Mizner Park bistro. Lion Country Safari – Located where the everglades meets civilization (in Western Palm Beach County) is a touch of Africa. Packages to Lion Country Safari could include box lunch and escorted safari, reminiscent of a Kenyan Adventure, where wild animals run free in as close to natural habitat as possible. Classical Music, Song & Dance – From Ballet, Opera, Symphonic Orchestras, Modern Dance and touring Broadway shows to the Pop's in the Park and Outdoor Festivals of all sorts, South Florida offers a wide variety of venues with entertainment to meet anyone's tastes. |
